Dear Neighbor,
As you know, last December the Trump administration announced its deeply dangerous plan to dismantle NCAR, as part of a blatantly retaliatory campaign against our state. Over the course of the past six weeks, I’ve worked to build a coalition of over 80 lawmakers to fight against this unlawful scheme. And just as we did in the fight to protect NOAA’s Office of Atmospheric Research — which, thanks to all of you, we succeeded in securing funding for in the latest appropriations bill — I will use every single tool available to stop Trump’s reckless proposal.
The threat to NCAR very much remains, evidenced by an outrageous “Dear Colleague Letter” issued by the National Science Foundation last week, which literally calls for the scientific community to provide input on how to dismantle the center. In the letter, the NSF reiterated its intent to supposedly “restructure” the research institution and the weather-related capabilities it operates. The agency also asked for input on opening “ownership of the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab building for private use” — in other words, looking to hand off their life-saving work to the highest bidder.
Let me be clear: The work being done at NCAR is vital to our state, our country, and our planet. I will not stand for any attempts to destroy the federally connected agencies and institutes tasked with keeping our communities safe.
I urge all Coloradans to also make their voices heard. The National Science Foundation is accepting public comments until March 13th.
