Dear Neighbor,

Last Friday, I wrote to you with a solemn update on the horrific killing of Minnesotan Renee Good by an ICE agent, and our work to push back against the lawlessness of the Trump administration, including ensuring real-time oversight of the Department of Homeland Security. Disturbingly, over the following weekend, we learned that a day after this tragedy, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem secretly issued a new illegal policy, once again subverting the law and the December court ruling in our lawsuit — Neguse et al. v. ICE et al. — which blocked the Trump administration from restricting on-the-ground visits to federal immigration detention facilities.

But the law is crystal-clear. And, on Monday, I was proud to lead my colleagues in an immediate return to Federal court to challenge this policy. As we await a ruling in this case, please know I am committed to doing everything I can to vindicate the Constitution and protect the rights of the American people. Over the past several days, I’ve joined with my colleagues on multiple legislative efforts to end the lawlessness and constitutional violations being committed by the Trump administration, and I will vehemently oppose House Republican’s ICE funding bill that the House will consider next week.

As we work to protect Colorado on multiple fronts, this week I also joined Senator Michael Bennet in pushing back on two proposals that could significantly impact communities on Colorado’s Western Slope.

First, we urged the Surface Transportation Board to reject a request tied to the proposed Uinta Basin Railway — which I’ve long opposed — and to conduct a full, transparent review of the project, including meaningful opportunities for public input.

Secondly, I supported Senator Bennet’s amendment to stop federal funding from being used to open or build a year-round road on public land north of Edwards, Colorado for a massive luxury mansion development. It’s simple: we must advocate for community-based solutions that represent the interests of Western Slope residents.

CONGRESS CHECKS TRUMP’S WAR POWERS IN VENEZUELA

Only Congress has the power to declare war. Full stop.

That’s why I joined my colleagues in introducing a war powers resolution this week that demands the removal of United States Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Venezuela that have not been authorized by Congress.

If Congress does not begin reasserting itself — immediately — our constitutional order will be permanently transformed. I’ll keep you posted on the progress of our resolution in the coming weeks.

STOPPING CUTS TO NOAA — BUT WE MUST SAVE NCAR

Recently, the House voted to advance a three-bill fiscal year 2026 ‘minibus’ that included funding for Colorado’s research institutes and laboratories. These facilities and the scientists and researchers who keep them moving are central to the fabric of our state and our nation, and I’m deeply grateful to my colleagues — Democrat and Republican — who joined me in pushing back against the Trump administration’s attacks on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

I’m proud that, thanks to all of your efforts, we succeeded in ensuring the legislation rolled back dangerous cuts to NOAA — preventing irreversible harm to critical programs. However, our bipartisan amendment to safeguard the extraordinary work being done at NCA was rejected by House Republican leadership.

Dismantling NCAR would be reckless, dangerous and place the United States at a serious competitive disadvantage. That is why our work to save NCAR is just beginning, and we will continue to utilize every tool available, including in upcoming appropriation bills. to keep pushing the Trump administration to cease its attacks on NCAR.

KICKING OFF THE YEAR WITH TWO TOWN HALLS!

As we charge forward into another busy year, I’m committed to doing everything we can to make sure public service means serving YOU! And to make good on that promise, on January 2nd, we completed our first and second town halls of the year in Walden and Georgetown!

I’m so thankful to all the folks across Jackson and Clear Creek Counties who attended our town halls for making their voices heard. Together, we’ll keep working to build a better and brighter future for our state and our country

🚲This week, a House Subcommittee considered our motor vehicle safety proposal honoring 17-year-old Boulder cyclist Magnus White, who tragically lost his life after being struck by a car. By modernizing safety standards and closing dangerous gaps in detection technology, our measure represents a critical step toward safer streets, fewer fatalities, and a transportation system that works for everyone.
