Dear Neighbor,  The last few weeks have been a very turbulent and chaotic time in our nation’s capital, as I’ve been focused on standing firm and charting a way forward that protects Colorado from the devastating harms caused by the administration’s actions. I’m incredibly grateful to the thousands of community members who have contacted our offices in Fort Collins, Boulder and Frisco to share their concerns, ask questions, and make their voices heard.  Earlier this week, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the creation of a Litigation Working Group and Rapid Response Task Force, which he has asked me to lead and serve as chairman of the effort. I’m honored to do so. As you know, in just the past month the Trump administration has issued a series of executive orders and administrative actions that are unconstitutional and will impose dire consequences for folks across the country, including here in Colorado. These actions warrant a decisive response, which is why our Task Force will work together to develop comprehensive legislative, oversight and legal strategies.  We also want to continue hearing from you, which is why we’re launching our Share Your Story form, a space for residents of Colorado’s 2nd District to share the challenges they’re facing during these tumultuous times. Your voice helps guide our work and ensures we advocate for the solutions our community needs. If you’d like to share a story from your household or community about the impacts of the President’s directives—such as federal hiring freezes, federal employee terminations, grant and loan funding freezes, agency office closures, or other executive actions—please fill out this form. Please read on for a recap of last week’s actions and activities. Our work continues.

Dear Neighbor,

The last few weeks have been a very turbulent and chaotic time in our nation’s capital, as I’ve been focused on standing firm and charting a way forward that protects Colorado from the devastating harms caused by the administration’s actions.

DEFENDING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

In case you missed it, watch my speech on the House Floor where I call out the devastating consequences of the current administration's reported plan to close the Department of Education HERE and below.

Exposing House Republicans’ Budget Plan

Presser 3

As Assistant Minority Leader, I convened a press conference with Ranking Member Brendan Boyle, and Budget Committee Democrats minutes after House Republicans’ released their budget reconciliation proposal. The proposal lays the foundation for implementation of the Trump Administration’s extreme economic agenda, allowing more than $4 trillion in tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, while vital community lifelines, like Medicaid, are put on the chopping block. We are doing everything we can to oppose the effort.

Standing Up for Forest Service & Federal Workers

Congress Letters

Over the past several days the Trump administration has initiated mass terminations in the Federal workforce, including countless Coloradans at the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Interior. These actions are a striking blow to the committed, hard-working federal employees who keep this country up and running. A workforce that’s responsible for the management of critical programs, including here in Colorado, that do everything from fighting fires to protecting our public lands. In addition, a lack of clarity from DOI has jeopardized the status of wildfire mitigation personnel, made even worse through a “hiring freeze” on wildland firefighters and seasonal employees that undermines wildfire preparedness and severely impacts the essential operations of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Bottom line — laying off hundreds of thousands of employees at a time is beyond reckless, which is why we organized and sent two letters in the past 24 hours demanding the administration reverse course.

If you or someone you know has been affected by recent orders issued by the White House, please refer to the list of resources my team has compiled to assist you. View our webpage HERE.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay hopeful!
